Fishing Reporting, October 23 through November 22, 2010
The Sea Dog and his first mate are leaving.
It's always a bit sad when one of our long time fishing couples leaves Kino. Dwain and Pauline Sweet will be heading back to Idaho this month. Their reasons for leaving are: age, health, and the fact that their children want them home.
The Sweets first arrived in Kino in 1989 and have not missed a year since. The Sea Dog captain's reputation as an expert fisherman is well known throughout the community. More importantly, Dwain has always been quick to share his knowledge of fishing areas, techniques, and equipment with anyone who asks. Their leaving is going to create a couple of big voids in our community. Dwain for all these years has been our resident tackle repair man, repairing rod and reels, etc. He always brought with him many of the parts and equipment to do the repairs. Pauline several years ago took over a project that the Vaughans use to do.She crochets baby blankets for the newborn babies in Old Kino and she has made hundreds of them. She uses yarn that people in the community bring her. Pauline is turning this important project over to Genia (Dave’s wife at the Kino Bay Bait and Tackle Shop). Pauline hopes that the community will support this project by taking yarn to Genia.
We are going to miss you !
Fishing Reporting, October 23 through November 22, 2010
10/23 - Red Rover, Mañana Maybe, and the Last One boats all fished the Turner area, and all limited out on Bonito and Yellowtail.
10/24 - Gator Bait, Sea Senior did the same as on 10/23
10/25 - Mi Amor, Pandamonium, and Last One all fished the Turner area and reported fishing as slow.
10/26 - NW wind

10/28 - NW wind
10/29 - El Sueno had 2 Bonito and 7 Yellowtail in the box when Harvey White brought up what they estimated as a 30-lb Yellowtail to the boat. But a big Sea Lion ate the entire fish except for the head. El Pato reported fishing slow where he was fishing. Gator Bait, Sand Dollar, Mañana Maybe, and Red Rover all caught their limits of Yellowtail and Bonito at the Turner area. It was somewhat windy.
10/30 - The wind lays down and 14 boats check out. I received reports from the following: Sand Dollar boat caught a limit of Yellowtail and a few Bonito; El Pato caught Yellowtail and bottom fish near Turner. However the best catch was that Jennell brought in a 15-lb White Sea Bass (her first). Nightwings caught 16 yellowtail and brought home 6; Sea Senior fished Turner and caught 6 yellowtail, a few Bonito, and some bottom fish. The water temperature was 71-74 degrees.
The most exciting event of the day was: Sea Dog went to 14 mile Reef and had a good day catching Rock Bass. Capt. Dwain said they would make one more drift then head for home. (The drift this day was right on top of the reef.) They got a double hookup of something big. Dwain lost his shortly and went to help Pauline who still had hers. It took her about 20 minutes to get it up to the boat. It was a White Sea Bass and it was laying on its side very docile until Dwain put the gaff in, then it started trashing around to the point they almost lost it. With much effort they finally got it in the boat.
How about this fish for their last trip in the Sea of Cortez?! 49-lb White Sea Bass caught by Pauline Sweet out of the Sea Dog boat October 30, 2010 at 14 mile reef.

11/21 - Seven boats went out but I received no reports. (This often means that the fishing was slow.)
11/22 - Fish and Bone, Turner, fishing slow; Bombero, Turner, limits of Yellowtail and Bonito; and Mona Lucy, Turner, fishing slow. The Montana Falconita boat (a two-person rubber boat) fishes about 2 minutes from the ramp, and today's catch was about 25 nice Rock Bass and a Flounder. They were gone about 1 1/2 hrs. The Red Rover boat has been out more days than probably anyone during this reporting period and comes home with the box full almost every time, This morning was no different. He hit the Yellowtail/Bonito bite at San Esteban at almost daylight this morning, and the bite was over shortly after 8:00am. Bob Faloon says that this fall has been one of the best fishing seasons he has experienced.
Did you know:
October/November is second only to the month of May as being the most active fishing months for sport fishing in our area. Since it is the beginning of this fun activity, it is also a time when fishing accidents begin to show up.The two most common accidents are fish hooks in the hand and scorpion stings, usually in the hand. Without meaning to insult anyones intelligence, the following are a few reminders:
FISH HOOKS:
Prevention - Never try to gaff a fish in the gills just to save some meat. Put the gaff in the meat of the fish body so that you can control it at the box or in the boat. When taking the hook out, leave the gaff in and ask your partner hold the fish with gloves or a rag. Use a good pair of pliers.
Treatment - Every boat and/or tackle box should include a device that will cut fish hooks, a bottle of hydrogen peroxide or equivalent, and a few pain pills and some antihistamines like Benedryl. If the hook is in a position that it can be cut and removed, do this first. Once the hook is removed, try to get it to bleed and then try to get some peroxide into the puncture. Take a pain pill and catch more fish. Sometimes the hook will be into the bone or such that it is difficult to remove. In such cases you might want to return to shore. Call ahead with your ETA to the ramp and have the First Responders meet you. Some of them are quite experienced at removing hooks. Be sure to tell them your problem. If the First Responders cannot help you, go to the clinic in Old Kino. These folks have removed hundreds of hooks.
SCORPION FISH:
Prevention - These fish have a relative soft mouth; the venom is in the fins closest to the mouth. One suggestion in removing this fish is to use a club about 2 ft. long and have your partner hit it with the club and knock it off the hook. Otherwise, use extra long pliers to hold the lip and another pair of long pliers to remove the hook. Be careful!
Treatment - First try to make the puncture wound bleed, put ice on the affected part. Take two antihistamine pills. When you quit crying, continue fishing. Note: This is not a joke. If the swelling in your hand starts to go up the arm and gets a few inches above the wrist and or the injured shows signs of a reaction, I recommend that you start for shore. Call First Responders and tell them the problem and give them an ETA. You may even consider requesting the First Responders or a doctor to come in another boat and meet you. The Scorpian or Sculpin fish venom in our area can be very dangerous and even fatal to those who have a severe reaction to it.

Fishing Report
Reporting period: February 21 through March 20, 20010
by Don Webb
-
Note: The primary event of this period was the wind. The wind blew 16 days during the period, and was a big factor in our loss of long time launcher Roberto. He has served our community for many years, and his launching will be missed, but more importantly his knowledge at the ramp during emergencies will really be missed. Roberto's brother Victor will take over the duties and boat captains will need to be patient with him for a while.

- March 17- forecast not good but Frigate, Escape and Lafiesta went to Turner but wind came up and became too rough to catch much.
- March 18-26 boats check out for every fishing area between Patos and 14 mile reef. Fishfinder, Sheepshead and Goldies ( Eagle Nest ) His fishing was cutshort due to towing a DIW boat back to the ramp. Hanan Ryan 17-18 lb.Yellowtail and huge Goldies from ( Patos ) 13 O 13 huge Goldies ( one was weighed at 5.8 lbs.) ( Patos ) RedRover golden grouper and goldies ( Willard ) Jayhawker Sheepshead, Big Goldies and one small Yellowtail ( San Pedro ) SeaSenor Goldies and a 15 and 25 lb. - March 19-16 boats checked out. Perry Dize Trolled for a couple of hours along the reef at the South end of Turner for Yellowtail but no hookups. They did cacth some nice bottom fish and two small White Sea Bass. Jayhawker fished from turner to Willard looking for Yellowtail, found none, caught nice Goldies and 3 sheepshead one of which weighed over 14 lbs. Rochelle fished 14 mile and besides Rockbass He brought home a 15.9 lb. Trigger fish ( That is a big Trigger!! ) RedRover fished SanEsteban and caught bottom fish.
Did you know: One of the most pervasive fish-catching tips is that fish are more active at dusk and dawn, This fact is true for certain fish, especially the larger predators. These larger fish are more productive in low light, when they can conceal their size and ambush the prey. For most othe fish, the time of day is less important than water temperature, moon phases, tide runs, and other weather related factors.
Fishing Report
Reporting period: January 20, 2009 through February 20, 20010
by Don Webb and Kent Ogden
- January 21-25 - NW winds, no fishing
- January 26-Jan 31 - The following boats gave us reports: Mona Lucy, RedRover, Mayflower, Perry Dize, Wet Willy, Jay Hawker, Sand Dollar, Grapevine, Gator Bait, and Seadog. They fished the Turner/Deadman, San Esteban, Willard, Eaglenest, San Pedro and 14 mile reef areas.
The catching during this period consisted mostly of bottom fish, (Golden Cabrilla, Rockbass, Sheepshead, Sardinero, or Golden Grouper. Trolling resulted in catching a few Bonita and quite a few Yellowtail that ranged from 6 to 20+ pounds. Some of the boats reported catching large Goldies, some 6 pounders. The Seadog boat made two trips to 14 mile reef leaving at 7:00am and back on the trailer at 10:00am with their limits of larger than normal Rockbass.
Special Note:It is with great sadness that during this time we learned of our friend Myron White passing. We are really going to miss that big smile and his fishing reports from Patos and 14 mile.
Water temperatures vary greatly depending on location Most water temperatures are running in the low 60s, however 67-68 degrees have been reported near San Esteban Island. This is another indicator of an El Nino effect. One boat was recently boarded by the military and checked the boat papers, they asked to look at the Captain's visa.
- February 1-13 boats check out, however we didn't get too many reports. Sand Dollar caught Yellowtail near Qillard and the Mayflower boat caught them near San Pedro. The Ellie Mae boat reported catching Flounder while trolling near shore, but didn't say which shore.
- February 2 -10 - Boats check out, but the only reports we received were: Rock and Reel had good luck with Rockbass and Triggers near Turner. The 13-O-13 boat brought back their limit of bottom fish from the San Esteban area. Perry Dize caught three nice Yellowtail near Willard. (When we don't receive very many reports, that usually means fishing was slow.)
- February 3 - Heavy rain storm, no fishing.
- February 4 - Eight boats check out, four went to Willard, but caught no Yellowtail. Haybaler found some nice Sardinero. Gator Bait stopped at Turner on his way in and landed a double hookup of nice Yellowtail.
- February 5 - Seadog and Grapevine limited out on Rockbass on 14 mile reef. Red Rover brought home his limit of Yellowtail from San Pedro.
- February 6 - Twelve boats hit the water with most of them going to San Pedro. Red Rover was the only boat to report catching a couple of Yellowtail. Several boats reported catching six and seven pound Goldies. Mona Lucy fished some deep water and brought home six grouper in the 20 pound range.
- February 7 - Super Bowl - no fishing.
- February 8 - Not much activity today, but Myron must have put in a good word for some of his "Good old boys" fishing 14 mile as they brought home near record size Rockbass. Thanks, Myron!
- February - Great fishing began today! All boats having one of their best days this season at all locations. Sand Dollar landed Yellowtail near San Esteban, Red Rover limited out on Yellowtail near Willard, sea Dancer weighed in a 27lb 6oz. Yellowtail caught near San Pedro. Gator Bait and 13O13 boxed some nice grouper and several tournament size 7 lb. Goldies, Mona Lucy boat caught seven more Grouper and two of them weighed in at 26lbs plus. They caught them on sardines in deep water.)
- February 10,11,12,13,14, 15 - NW winds
- February 16 - RedRover and Irie both go to San Pedro and caught their limit of Yellowtail Ranchers Reward go to the Turner area and is for several days.
- February 17 - The forcast for a great day on the water generated the following boats to go out: Dea Dancer, Gator Bait, Sea Dog, Irie, Mona Lucy, 13O13, Redrover, Mi Amore, Backlash, Hana Ryan, Fish Finder, Sea Le Hace, Grapevine, Frigate Escape,Ranchers Reward, Alabi, Colorado Farmer, Haybaler, Bite Me, Rock & Reel, (I missed some but there were 26 boats checked out.) We had one rescue involving the Bite Me and Rock & Reel who did a great job but didn't get to fish much. Most of the boats checked out for San Pedro and the reports we received indicated tha t fishing was slow except for some gig Goldies. The few boats what went to Willard: Sea Dancer, Backlash, Sea LE Hace and Ranchers Reward all caught their limits of Yellowtail. The Grapevine boat went to 14 mile Reef and besides catching Rockbass they brought home a nice Flounder and a Pinto.
- February 18 - RedRover, Irie, and Rosie all checked out for Willard. No reports from the Irie Boat. The El Sueno and the Perry Dizee boat checked out for Turner. They both brought home some nice bottom fish. Rosie caught a limit of yellowtail near Willard point.
- The big event of the day was a 116 lb "Gulf Grouper" that the RedRover boat brought in, and was caught near Willard Point.
- February 19 - Big Dreams and Wildcat check out to the Turner area. Fishfinder, El Coyte, and RedRover head for San Esteban, while Sea Dancer and Sand Dollar are going to try their luck up at Willard point. RedRover limited out on Yellowtail.
February 20 - SW winds and big rollers, the only boat to go out was RedRover who went to Turner and caught 2 Yellowtail but had a medical incident on the boat and returned early.
Did you know:
Fish do see colors. However, bacause water and air reflect light differently, what a fish sees and what a lure buying fisherman sees are far from equal. Bottom fish see less color because there is less light, top water fish see more color because there is more light. and of all the colors, red disappears fastest at a depth of about 15 feet. Silvery lures may work best in deeper waters becasue they reflect what little light exists in the fathoms.
Fishing Report
Reporting period: December 15, 2009 through January 20, 20010
by Don Webb
- During this reporting period we experienced 21 days of wind when no fishing took place. This is somewhat normal for January.
- December 16 through 19 strong NW winds no fishing
- December 20 through 30 many boats went out mostly to San Esteban and Turner Island areas. I received reports from the following boats: Perry Dize, Fish Finder, Wet Willy, Red Rover, La Fiesta, Rosie and Overcast.
Their catch reports were all about the same. Excellent Yellowtail and Bonita fishing (primarily trolling) The Yellowtail sizes ran from 6-8 lbs. to a lot of 12- 18 lbs, and a few 20 plus lbs.
The Red Rover boat, who fishes as much or more than about anyone in our area, said he went fishing every day the wind didn't blow during this time, and everyone on the boat caught limits of Yellowtail or Bonita.
He also observed that when the water temperatures were running about 68 degrees they caught lots of Bonita, but when the temperature dropped to 64 degrees the Bonita were gone.
- December 30 Sea Dog had a good catch of Rock Bass from 14 mile reef.
- December 31 through January 6 NW winds.
- January 7 Rosie and Sea Dog fished the San Esteban areas and the catching was slow.
- January 8 Hill Billy Yacht, Pattyjuan, and the El Hefa boats fished the San Esteban areas and reported it gererally slow, however Hill Billy Yacht did catch 5 small and 3 nice size Yellowtail.
The most interesting thing that happened on this day was with the El Hefa boat. Scott Branscombe was aboard. They were trolling near the NW corner of San Esteban without catching anything when they observed a bunch of
fish breaking the surface of the water and the birds diving. They trolled back and forth through them with out a hookup. They decided the fish went down deep so they started to fast retreive or jig for them.
Scott went quite deep in 300 foot of water and noticed he had a birdnest in his spool and began to untangle it. About this same time the captain of the boat (Les Woodward, a commercial fisherman from Alaska )
yelled " look at all the fish around the boat " Scott had the bird nest untangled and trying to get up fast but now has a fish on and is not coming up very fast (it was a big Goldie) Les cast out into the
fish and snagged one It is a small DORADO! as were all the fish swimming around the boat. Remember, this is the 8th of January and the water temperature is 63.5 dgrees.
To have Dorado in our waters this time of year and when the water temperatures are in the 60's is most unusual. Quite a few years ago in 1997 this writer remembers when Chuck McDonaughm, Otil Turner,
and Ron Lewis caught Dorado on the 13th of April in 67 degree water near San Pedro Island. It was a strong "El Nino " year and quite a few strange things occurred in our waters. We are suppose to be in a
"El Nino" year again so we may have some interesting fishing ahead of us !
- January 9 through 12 NW winds
- January 3 the winds finally stop and many of our boats went out but the catching was reported to be slow. The 13-O-13 boat did report catching 3 nice Sheepshead. Fishing the 14 mile reef continues to be good for Rock Bass.
- January 14 Red Flag wind warning 33 knots
- January 15 and 16 NW wind
- January 17 Fishfinder, Mona Lucy, Sand Dollar, Queonda, go to the Eaglenest, Willard, and San Esteban areas and brought home bottomfish and a few Yellowtail. Rock and Reel was fishing at the South end of Turner and caught a Yellowtail while jigging for White Sea Bass. Mona Lucy came back to Turner and was jigging for White Sea bass when Jack hooked a big fish. He got it up about half way when it broke off but he had big fish scales on his hook, so I guess he came pretty close to getting a White.
- January 18 Gator Bait went to Queens rock and brought back nice Goldies (long trip- rough water ); 13-O-13 Willard bottom fish;
Hill Billy yacht Willard bottom fish and two nice Yellowtail; Nightwing Colorado Point bottom fish; Perrydize Willard bottom fish. Sea dog was launched at7:00 am
and went to 14 mile reef. He was back on the trailer at 10:00 am and the 4 people on board all had their limits of some of the largest Rock Bass they have ever
caught there.
- January 19 and 20 Strong Southerly winds and big swells, no boats go out.
DID YOU KNOW: In 1997, El Ninos strong currents carried exotic warm water fish to cold water shores. Fishermen targeting Halibut and Salmon off Kodiak, Alaska caught a Yellowtail. The catch was so unusual that fishery biologist had trouble identifying it at first. A few weeks earlier an angler landed a Striped Marlin near Puget Sound, Oregon, and a Blue Marlin common to Mexican waters was caught near San Diego.
Fishing Report
Reporting period: November 20-December 15, 2009
by Don Webb
The following boats were reported to have gone out fishing during this period:
Backlash, Perry Dize, Manana Maybe, MonaLucy, Bombero, RedRover, Hill Billy Yachet,
Haybailer, SeaSenor, Overcast, Rosie, Fishfinder, Monte Negro, O sprey, Quatro Cinco,
Little PlayBoy, Rock and Reel, Gator Bait, Foeign Affair, and Joy Rider.
Destinations were primarily to Turner, San Esteban and San Pedro Islands.
The major catching events of this period was Bonita, Sierra Mackeral, and Yellowtail.
This has been the longest and most prolific Bonita season in recent memory,
and it still continues.
On the 13th, many boats went out to the same areas as mentioned above, with Bonita
and Yellowtail being the basic catch. There were 12 days of strong wind
during this period when boats could not go out.
Bio Sphere Information (the area arond San Pedro Island:)
A short meeting was held on the 9th but the information given was so confussing
and lacking that they plan to hold another meeting on the17th with better
information.
Did You Know ?
Truly fresh fish are almost odorless.
The fishiness of a catch is caused by
oxidized fats and acids released by bacteria and enzymes. Most anglers
know to ice down a catch immediately. Some bleed their fish before icing.
Contaminants are not detroyed by cooking. However, trimming the belly fat and
skinning the fillets will help greatly. You should also cut away all the dark
fatty tissue along the lateral line. Broiling or grilling the fillets will
cause any leftover fat to drip away. And please do not use the drippings for
sauces.

Did You Know :
The largest Rooster fish ever caught on a rod and reel weighed 114 lbs. Since that day in 1960 only a handfull of Roosters have topped the 90lb. threshold, Ten year old Keith DeFiebre was drift fishing near Buena Vista, Mexico when he hooked one. After almost
two hours he had the fish up to the boat, " I didn't know how big the fish was but the mate couldn't pull it in without help from the Captain" Later that dayThe fish was weighed and then filleted. Had it been officially weighed, the 95 lb Rooster fish caught on 20 lb. test line would have set a new world record.
