Anne DeFrance is president of Club Deportivo in Kino Bay, Mexico. Welcome to our website -- a virtual tour of our unique club, established in 1977 where friendships are formed and soon become family. We are unique because first and foremost Club Deportivo offers Rescue One, the only 24/7 rescue service of its kind in Mexico. The club also offers a social life, connection, security and information. It's a place to go for help, friendship and fun. To the Kino Bay community, it's an example of the best that we can offer in return for the "good life" in this beautiful place. As you travel through Mexico, you will find no place that offers a club like Club Deportivo; it's one of a kind. Enjoy browsing.
Many of our activities take place in a steel arched building three blocks east of Mar de Cortez on Cadiz that was built in 1981. Club Deportivo is now seeking to acquire the land it occupies and secure its home in Kino Bay on a permanent basis.
Rescue One is the number one activity of our club and is the reason the club was established. Rescue One is a 24/7 365 days per year service that provides a safety net for boaters using the Sea of Cortez and travelers crossing the Sonoran Desert. It is also the communications hub for emergencies in our community. This service is open to all, not just our members. It is the only service of its kind in Mexico.
The Club membership has grown and changed from a mostly fishing population to a population of expatriates from the United States, Canada, and other places around the world. Many members now own homes in Kino, with some retirees living here year round. The Club building has been enlarged and expanded to include a large meeting space, kitchen, bar, library, and offices.
The Club's activities include sporting events and games, fishing and golf tournaments, dinners and breakfasts, fund-raising events for local organizations, classes, and informational and social gatherings. The facilities are often used by community groups and governmental agencies for large gatherings. It serves as a collection site for emergency food and supplies and for recyclable goods.
The Club and its members are active in Kino, providing humanitarian and emergency services, employing local workers, hiring local contractors, frequenting local restaurants, and buying local products. The economic impact is great, and the presence of Club Deportivo and its member population contributes to the perception of Kino Bay as a highly attractive tourist and retirement destination.
